United Premier Status Changes 2027: PQFs Gone, 1K Gets Pricier

If you have been keeping United status by flying a lot of short, inexpensive segments, 2027 is the year that strategy stops working. The United Premier status changes for 2027 remove Premier Qualifying Flights (PQFs) from the formula entirely. Starting January 1, the only number that moves you toward MileagePlus elite status is how many Premier Qualifying Points (PQPs) you earn, and Premier 1K now costs 32,000 of them.

Here is what is changing, who takes the biggest hit, what the new thresholds cost in real dollars, and the moves worth making before December 31.

What Are the United Premier Status Changes for 2027?

United announced the overhaul on October 13, 2026. Today, MileagePlus gives you two ways to reach each Premier tier. You can earn a higher number of PQPs on their own, or you can combine a lower PQP total with a minimum number of flights. The second path rewarded people who fly often but buy cheaper tickets.

That flight-based path disappears on January 1, 2027. Because United status earned during a calendar year is the status you hold the following year, this change shapes who has Premier status in 2028. Anything you earn in the rest of 2026 still counts under the current rules.

One flying requirement survives. You still need at least four flights operated by United or United Express during the year to qualify for any tier. Flights on Star Alliance partners do not count toward those four, even if you booked them with a United flight number.

United Premier Status Requirements: 2026 vs 2027

The table below compares the current two tracks with the single 2027 requirement. The last column shows how many extra PQPs you need if you currently qualify through the flight track.

Premier tier 2026 flight track 2026 PQP-only 2027 requirement Extra PQPs for flight-track flyers
Premier Silver 15 PQFs + 5,000 PQPs 6,000 PQPs 6,000 PQPs +1,000 (20%)
Premier Gold 30 PQFs + 10,000 PQPs 12,000 PQPs 12,000 PQPs +2,000 (20%)
Premier Platinum 45 PQFs + 15,000 PQPs 18,000 PQPs 18,000 PQPs +3,000 (20%)
Premier 1K 60 PQFs + 22,000 PQPs 28,000 PQPs 32,000 PQPs +10,000 (45%)

For Silver, Gold and Platinum, the PQP-only numbers do not move. If you already qualify on PQPs alone, those tiers look the same in 2027. Premier 1K is the only tier where the bar rises for everyone: the PQP-only requirement climbs from 28,000 to 32,000, an increase of about 14%.

Who Loses the Most Under the New United Elite Rules?

Frequent short-haul flyers. If your status comes from dozens of hub-to-hub hops on fares that do not cost much, the flight count was doing a lot of the work for you. That count now earns nothing toward status. Every tier needs 20% more PQPs than the flight track asked for, and 1K needs 45% more.

Premier 1K members, regardless of how they qualify. Flight-track 1Ks face an extra 10,000 PQPs. PQP-only 1Ks face an extra 4,000. There is no version of 1K that gets easier.

Basic economy travelers. United also said it is cutting what basic economy tickets earn, following similar moves at American and Delta. If cheap fares were part of your plan, check the updated earning rates on United’s site before you book.

Elites without a United credit card. The annual starter PQP deposit, which elites have received in recent years, is now tied to holding an eligible United card. More on that below.

The people least affected are those who already buy higher-fare tickets, such as last-minute business travel or premium cabins, and already clear the PQP-only thresholds below 1K.

What 32,000 PQPs Costs in Real Dollars

On paid United tickets, PQPs track closely with what you spend on eligible fares, so 32,000 PQPs works out to roughly $32,000 in eligible airfare in a single year. That number is the cleanest way to think about the new 1K.

Now take a typical flight-track 1K today: 60 flights and 22,000 PQPs. That traveler spends an average of about $367 in PQPs per flight (22,000 divided by 60). To find another 10,000 PQPs at that same average, they would need roughly 28 more flights a year, taking them from 60 flights to about 88.

The credit card route is not much friendlier. The United Club Card and United Club Business Card earn 1 PQP per $15 spent. Closing a 10,000 PQP gap on one of those cards takes about $150,000 of spending. Earning the full 32,000 PQPs on cards alone would take about $480,000. Other United cards earn 1 PQP per $20, so even a 4,000 PQP gap for a PQP-only 1K means roughly $80,000 in card spend.

Award flights also help. United awards PQPs on miles redeemed for United and United Express flights, at 1 PQP per 100 miles. A 60,000-mile award would add about 600 PQPs, which is useful at the margin but not a substitute for paid travel.

The Starter PQP Deposit Now Requires a United Credit Card

United is keeping a head start for existing elites, but it now comes with a condition. Eligible United cardholders will receive PQPs equal to 5% of the requirement for their current tier at the start of 2027:

  • Premier Silver: 300 PQPs
  • Premier Gold: 600 PQPs
  • Premier Platinum: 900 PQPs
  • Premier 1K: 1,600 PQPs

Reports on the announcement say the deposit is based on your Premier status as of February 1, 2027, and that your eligible card account must be open by December 31, 2026. Card eligibility rules can be narrow, so confirm the details on United’s page before you apply for anything.

Put in dollar terms, the 1K deposit is worth about $1,600 of eligible airfare, or $24,000 of spending on a Club card. Helpful, but it covers only a small slice of the new gap.

The United Club Card PQP Cap Rises to 32,000

The one change that loosens anything: the annual PQP cap on the United Club Card and United Club Business Card rises from 28,000 to 32,000 in 2027. That matches the new 1K threshold exactly.

In theory, that means a very high spender could earn Premier 1K almost entirely through a credit card, plus the four required United-operated flights. In practice, $480,000 of annual card spend is out of reach for nearly everyone, and putting that much on a card earning standard MileagePlus miles has a real opportunity cost. If you have spend at that level, a flexible currency like Ultimate Rewards or Membership Rewards may be worth more to you than the status. Our guide to meeting minimum spend without overspending covers how to route spending without wasting money.

How to Protect Your United Status in 2027

  1. Finish 2026 strong under the old rules. The flight track still works through December 31, and status earned this year runs into early 2028. If you are a few segments short of the next tier, this is the last chance to use them.
  2. Decide on a United card before December 31. If you value the starter deposit and the card fits your spending, having an eligible account open by year end is what unlocks it. Do not open a card for a few hundred PQPs alone if the annual fee does not make sense.
  3. Shift from more flights to better-value flights. Every dollar of eligible fare now matters more than every segment. Nonstops on higher fares and occasional premium cabins can earn more PQPs than a string of cheap connections.
  4. Book your four United-operated flights early. Partner flights will not satisfy the minimum. Lock in those four segments early in the year so they never become the reason you miss a tier.
  5. Use award redemptions for a PQP top-up. At 1 PQP per 100 miles redeemed on United flights, awards will not carry you, but they can close a small gap late in the year.
  6. Ask whether 1K is still worth chasing. If you were already near the edge, compare what you actually get from 1K against the extra spend. Our ranking of the best frequent flyer programs for U.S. travelers and our look at Alaska’s Atmos Rewards are good starting points if you are weighing a switch.

Is This a United MileagePlus Devaluation?

For most people who qualify on PQPs alone below 1K, no. Those thresholds are unchanged. For anyone who relied on flight count, and for every 1K, yes: the same status costs more in 2027 than it does today. It also follows the direction the other big U.S. carriers have taken, tying elite status more tightly to spending than to time in the air. American’s program already works this way, as our guide to earning American Airlines Loyalty Points without flying explains.

If you want a broader framework for reacting to changes like this, read our breakdown of miles and points devaluations. The short version: do not hoard status or miles for a program that keeps raising the price, and keep your options open.

You can read United’s own summary of the changes on the MileagePlus what’s new page.

Details verified against United’s announcement and coverage published October 13 to 14, 2026. Program terms can change, so confirm current rules with United before making status or card decisions.

Takeaway

The United Premier status changes for 2027 make MileagePlus elite status a pure spending program. Premier Qualifying Flights no longer lower your target, Premier 1K rises to 32,000 PQPs, and the starter PQP deposit now requires an eligible United card opened by December 31, 2026. If you already earn status on PQPs alone below 1K, little changes. If you fly often on cheaper fares or hold 1K, plan now: use the old rules while they last, decide on a card before year end, and be honest about whether the top tier is still worth what it costs.
