1. Information we collect
Information you give us
- Newsletter sign-ups: your email address and, if you provide it, your first name.
- Contact form and email: your name, email address, and the content of your message.
- Comments: your name, email address, optional website, comment text, and the IP address and browser information recorded with the comment.
- Purchases and bookings: when you buy a digital product or book a strategy session through our Stan store, we receive your name, email address, what you bought, and any details you share for the session. Payment card details are handled by Stan and its payment processors. We do not receive or store full card numbers.
- Sign in with Google: if you choose to sign in with Google where offered, Google shares your name, email address, and profile image with us.
Please do not send us sensitive information, such as card numbers, loyalty program passwords, Social Security numbers, or passport numbers.
Information collected automatically
When you visit the Site, we and our partners automatically collect technical information, including your IP address, approximate location (city or region, derived from your IP address), browser and device type, operating system, referring website, pages viewed, time spent, links clicked (including affiliate links), and identifiers stored in cookies or similar technologies.
Information from third parties
- Affiliate partners report clicks, sign-ups, and commissions to us. These reports generally do not identify you by name.
- Social media platforms may share information when you interact with our accounts or content there, according to your settings on those platforms.
- Analytics and advertising providers give us aggregated reports about how visitors use the Site.
2. How we use information
- To run, maintain, secure, and improve the Site, including preventing spam and abuse.
- To send the newsletter and other emails you asked for.
- To reply to your messages and provide products or sessions you purchased.
- To publish and moderate comments.
- To understand which content is useful, through analytics.
- To show ads and to track affiliate referrals so we are paid for them.
- To comply with the law, enforce our Terms, and protect the rights and safety of our readers, ourselves, and others.
We do not use your personal information to make decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects about you.
3. Cookies, analytics, and advertising
Cookies are small files stored on your device. We and our partners also use similar technologies such as pixels, tags, and local storage. We use them for the following purposes:
- Essential and security: keeping the Site working, caching pages for speed, remembering comment details if you choose, and blocking spam (including Akismet and Antispam Bee).
- Analytics: Google Analytics helps us understand traffic and how pages perform. We also use Independent Analytics, which stores aggregated visit statistics on our own server.
- Advertising: we may show ads through Google (including Google AdSense) and Travelpayouts. These partners may use cookies to show ads based on your visits to this and other websites, to limit how often you see an ad, and to measure ad performance.
- Affiliate tracking: when you click an affiliate link, the merchant or affiliate network (for example, Amazon or a card issuer’s partner network) may set a cookie so the referral can be credited to us.
- Embedded content: videos, social posts, and tools embedded from YouTube, Instagram, and other services behave as if you visited those services directly and may set their own cookies.
Google advertising
Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this Site or other websites. Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads based on your visits to this Site and other sites on the internet. You can opt out of personalized advertising from Google at My Ad Center. To learn more, see How Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services.
Managing cookies
- Most browsers let you block or delete cookies in their settings. Blocking some cookies may affect how the Site works.
- Opt out of Google Analytics with the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
- Opt out of interest-based ads from many companies at optout.aboutads.info, optout.networkadvertising.org, or, in Europe, youronlinechoices.eu.
Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control
There is no common industry standard for browser “Do Not Track” signals, and the Site does not currently respond to them. Global Privacy Control (GPC) is different: where applicable law requires it, we treat a GPC signal from your browser as a request to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information and of targeted advertising for that browser. Learn more at globalprivacycontrol.org.
4. How we share information
We share personal information only as described here:
- Service providers that help us run the Services and may only use the information to provide services to us, including our web host (Hostinger), our email newsletter provider (Kit), our store and booking platform (Stan) and its payment processors, our email delivery service, our contact form tool, spam protection (Akismet by Automattic), and Google (Analytics and Site Kit).
- Advertising and affiliate partners, which receive device identifiers, IP address, and browsing activity through cookies and similar tools on the Site, as described in Section 3.
- Public comments, which display your name, comment, and any website you provide. Comment avatars may be loaded from Gravatar using a hashed version of your email address.
- Legal and safety reasons, when we believe in good faith that disclosure is required by law or needed to protect rights, property, or safety.
- Business transfers, if the Site or our business is sold, merged, or transferred, in which case this policy will continue to apply to your information.
- With your consent, or at your direction.
We do not sell personal information for money. However, some U.S. state laws treat allowing advertising partners to collect information through cookies for targeted advertising as a “sale” or “sharing” of personal information. You can opt out of this as explained in Sections 5 and 6.
5. Your choices
- Email: unsubscribe at any time using the link at the bottom of every newsletter.
- Cookies and ads: use your browser settings and the opt-out tools in Section 3.
- Targeted advertising, sale, or sharing: email contact@milesandpointsguru.com with the subject line “Do Not Sell or Share,” or turn on Global Privacy Control in your browser.
- Comments: ask us to remove a comment you posted by emailing us.
6. Privacy rights for U.S. residents
Depending on the state where you live, including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Utah, Texas, Oregon, and other states with consumer privacy laws, you may have the right to:
- know and access the personal information we hold about you, and get a portable copy of it;
- correct inaccurate personal information;
- delete personal information we collected from you;
- opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information, targeted advertising, and certain profiling; and
- appeal our decision if we decline your request.
How to make a request: email contact@milesandpointsguru.com with the subject line “Privacy Request” and tell us what you would like us to do. To protect your information, we will verify your request, usually by confirming that you control the email address involved. You may use an authorized agent; we may ask for proof that the agent is authorized and ask you to verify your identity directly.
We will respond within the time required by law, usually 45 days. If we decline your request, you may appeal by replying to our decision with the subject line “Privacy Appeal.” If you are not satisfied with the outcome of your appeal, you may contact your state attorney general.
We will not discriminate against you for exercising your privacy rights.
7. Additional information for California residents
In the past 12 months, we have collected the following categories of personal information, from the sources and for the purposes described in Sections 1 and 2:
- Identifiers, such as name, email address, IP address, and cookie identifiers. Disclosed to service providers, and through cookies to advertising and affiliate partners.
- Commercial information, such as products you bought from us. Disclosed to service providers.
- Internet or network activity, such as pages viewed and links clicked. Disclosed to service providers, and through cookies to analytics, advertising, and affiliate partners.
- Approximate geolocation derived from IP address. Disclosed to service providers, and through cookies to analytics and advertising partners.
- Inferences drawn by advertising partners about your interests. Shared through advertising cookies.
We do not collect sensitive personal information for the purpose of inferring characteristics about you, and we do not knowingly sell or share the personal information of consumers under 16.
Shine the Light: California residents may ask whether we disclosed personal information to third parties for their own direct marketing purposes in the prior calendar year. We do not make such disclosures. You may still send a request to the email address below.
8. Visitors from the EEA, UK, and Switzerland
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, we process your personal information on these legal bases: your consent (for example, for the newsletter and for non-essential cookies where consent is required); performance of a contract (for example, providing a product you bought); our legitimate interests in running, securing, and improving the Site and responding to you; and compliance with legal obligations.
You have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, or object to the processing of your personal information, to data portability, and to withdraw consent at any time without affecting earlier processing. You also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority. To exercise your rights, email us at the address below.
Your information is processed in the United States and other countries where our service providers operate, which may not offer the same level of protection as your home country. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards, such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses or our providers’ certifications under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework and its UK and Swiss extensions.
9. How long we keep information
We keep personal information only as long as we need it for the purposes described in this policy, unless the law requires us to keep it longer. For example, we keep newsletter details until you unsubscribe, messages for as long as needed to respond and keep a reasonable record, published comments for as long as they remain on the Site, and purchase records for as long as required for tax and accounting purposes. Analytics data is kept according to the retention settings of our analytics tools.
10. Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect personal information, including encrypted connections (HTTPS), access controls, and reputable service providers. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
11. Children’s privacy
The Services are not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has given us personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will change the “Last updated” date at the top. If we make significant changes, we may also post a notice on the Site or email subscribers. We will not use personal information we already hold in a materially different way without notice and, where required, your consent.
