How Long Do Points Transfers Take? Amex, Chase, Citi, Bilt

You found the award: two business class seats, your exact dates, priced at a fraction of the cash fare. Now you have to move your credit card points into the airline program before someone else grabs those seats, and the clock starts the moment you hit “transfer.”

So how long do points transfers take? Most land in seconds. Some take most of a day. A few leave you waiting close to a week while the award sits unprotected. Knowing which is which before you transfer is the difference between booking the seat and staring at a balance you can’t send back.

Why Points Transfer Times Matter

Two facts make timing a big deal. First, transfers are one-way. Once your Amex Membership Rewards points become Virgin Atlantic Flying Club miles, they stay Flying Club miles. Second, award seats aren’t reserved for you while you wait. Most airlines won’t hold a seat until the miles arrive.

Put those together and a slow transfer is a real risk. If the seat disappears during a two-day wait, you’re stuck with miles in a program you may not need again soon, and those miles are exposed to the next devaluation.

The times below come from AwardWallet, which measures real transfers: its own, plus those of members who track a destination account while waiting for points to post. Treat them as averages, not promises. A partner that’s usually instant can occasionally take a day, and a slow one can surprise you.

Transfer Times to Popular Airline Partners

This table is built around the airline you want to book, so you can compare every bank on one row.

Airline program Amex Chase Citi Capital One Bilt
Air Canada Aeroplan Instant ~47 min n/a Instant No data
Air France-KLM Flying Blue Instant Instant Instant Instant No data
Avianca LifeMiles Instant n/a Instant Instant No data
British Airways Club (Avios) Instant Instant n/a Instant No data
Virgin Atlantic Flying Club Instant Instant Instant Instant ~15 hours
JetBlue TrueBlue Instant Instant Instant ~2 hours No data
United MileagePlus n/a Instant n/a n/a No data
Southwest Rapid Rewards n/a Instant n/a n/a No data
Delta SkyMiles Instant n/a n/a n/a n/a
Emirates Skywards Instant n/a No data Instant No data
Turkish Miles&Smiles n/a n/a ~17 hours Instant ~6 days
Cathay Pacific Asia Miles ~8 hours n/a Instant ~2 days No data
Qatar Privilege Club ~15 hours n/a ~1 day No data No data
Singapore KrisFlyer ~11 hours ~1 day ~20 hours ~18 hours n/a
Iberia Plus (Avios) ~1 day Instant n/a n/a No data
ANA Mileage Club ~2 days n/a n/a n/a n/a
Alaska Atmos Rewards n/a n/a n/a n/a ~9 hours
American AAdvantage n/a n/a No data n/a n/a

“Instant” means points typically post within minutes. “No data” means AwardWallet hasn’t recorded enough transfers to publish an average, not that the transfer is slow. “n/a” means that bank doesn’t transfer to that program.

Most of these move at 1:1. The exceptions worth knowing: Amex converts to Cathay Pacific and Emirates at 1,000 to 800, Capital One converts to Emirates at 1,000 to 750 and to JetBlue at 1,000 to 600, and Citi cards without an annual fee transfer at 1,000 to 700.

Three patterns stand out:

  1. Flying Blue, Virgin Atlantic, LifeMiles and Aeroplan are fast almost everywhere. That reliability is part of why they’re go-to programs for booking partner awards across airline alliances.
  2. Singapore KrisFlyer is never instant. Every major bank averages 11 hours to a full day, so plan on waiting overnight.
  3. The same airline can be fast or slow depending on the bank. Turkish Miles&Smiles is instant from Capital One, about 17 hours from Citi, and about 6 days from Bilt. Cathay Pacific is instant from Citi but about 2 days from Capital One. If you hold more than one currency, speed is a good reason to pick one over the other.

Transfer Times to Hotel Partners

Hotel program Amex Chase Citi Capital One Bilt
World of Hyatt n/a Instant n/a n/a No data
Marriott Bonvoy ~51 min ~2 days n/a n/a ~38 min
Hilton Honors Instant n/a n/a n/a No data
IHG One Rewards n/a ~5 hours n/a n/a No data
Choice Privileges Instant n/a No data No data n/a
Wyndham Rewards n/a No data No data ~13 hours No data
Accor Live Limitless n/a n/a ~2 days ~1 hour No data

Hotel award rooms usually don’t vanish as fast as premium airline seats, so a slow hotel transfer stings less. The one to watch is Chase to Marriott Bonvoy, which averages about 2 days.

Chase to World of Hyatt is instant, which matters because Hyatt is the most valuable Chase hotel partner. The ratio now depends on your card: Sapphire Reserve cardholders transfer at 1:1, while Sapphire Preferred and Ink cardholders transfer at 4:3. We break that down in our Chase Sapphire Preferred changes guide.

Marriott Bonvoy to Airlines: The Slowest Route

Travelers waiting at an airport gate, like waiting for transferred Marriott Bonvoy points to post to an airline

Marriott Bonvoy is the hotel program people most often move into airline miles, since it partners with dozens of airlines. It’s also the slowest and least efficient way to get miles.

The math: Marriott transfers at 3 Bonvoy points to 1 airline mile, with a 5,000-mile bonus for every 60,000 points you move at once. So 60,000 Bonvoy points become 20,000 miles plus 5,000 bonus miles, or 25,000 miles. United MileagePlus is the exception, with a 10,000-mile bonus that turns 60,000 points into 30,000 miles.

Compare that with Amex, Chase, Capital One or Bilt, where 60,000 points usually become 60,000 miles in minutes.

Marriott Bonvoy to… Average transfer time
ANA Mileage Club 4 to 7 days
Air Canada Aeroplan 4 to 5 days
Etihad Guest 3 to 5 days
Singapore KrisFlyer ~4 days
Qatar Privilege Club 3 to 4 days
Emirates Skywards ~3 days
United MileagePlus 2 to 5 days
British Airways Club 1 to 3 days
Delta SkyMiles 1 to 2 days
Alaska Atmos Rewards ~1 day
Turkish Miles&Smiles ~1 day
Virgin Atlantic Flying Club ~15 hours

The practical rule: don’t count on Marriott points to grab a specific award you found today. Use them to top up an airline balance well before you need it.

The Slowest Points Transfers to Watch

These routes average a day or more. Avoid them for any booking where the seat could disappear.

Transfer Average time
Citi ThankYou to Thai Royal Orchid Plus 3 to 7 days
Citi ThankYou to Aeromexico Rewards ~6 days
Bilt to Turkish Miles&Smiles ~6 days
Marriott Bonvoy to ANA Mileage Club 4 to 7 days
Marriott Bonvoy to Saudia AlFursan ~5 days
Amex to ANA Mileage Club ~2 days
Capital One to Cathay Pacific Asia Miles ~2 days
Chase to Marriott Bonvoy ~2 days
Amex to Iberia Plus ~1 day

A few of these averages rest on a small number of transfers, so your experience may differ. Treat any of them as a reason to hold the award first or use a faster bank.

7 Tips to Transfer Points Without Losing the Award

  1. Confirm the award is bookable before you transfer. Search the airline’s own site with your exact dates and cabin. PointsYeah shows which transfer partners have space, and our guide to finding award availability covers the search itself.
  2. Use the fastest bank you hold. If you have both Capital One miles and Bilt Points and want Turkish Miles&Smiles, the tables above make the choice for you.
  3. Hold the award when the airline allows it. Some programs will hold a seat for a day or more, online or by phone. Check before you start a slow transfer.
  4. Link your accounts ahead of time. Add your loyalty number to your bank account and make sure the names match exactly. A name mismatch is a common reason a transfer fails or stalls, and it’s easier to fix before you’re racing for a seat.
  5. Know the minimums. Capital One transfers start at 1,000 miles, and Bilt requires at least 2,000 points per transfer. Move only what the award costs, plus a small buffer for taxes or price changes.
  6. Set an alert instead of refreshing. AwardWallet Balance Watch checks the destination account up to 24 times a day and notifies you when the miles post. If the miles appear but checkout won’t accept them, give it an hour before calling, since some programs lag between posting and booking.
  7. Don’t transfer just to have miles ready. Points sitting in Amex, Chase, Citi, Capital One or Bilt keep all your options open. Transfer when you have a specific award in hand, or let Thrifty Traveler Premium send you award deals worth moving points for (use code MAPG).

Takeaway

Most transfers from Amex, Chase, Citi and Capital One to Flying Blue, Virgin Atlantic, Aeroplan, LifeMiles and British Airways post in minutes. Singapore KrisFlyer, Qatar and ANA usually take most of a day or longer, and Marriott Bonvoy to airlines can take nearly a week at a steep 3:1 ratio.

Before you move a single point, confirm the seat, pick the fastest bank you hold, and set an alert. Transfers can’t be undone, but with the right timing they don’t have to cost you the award.
